2010 Scholarship

"Sharpening the African Image through Education".

The AfriMETRO Scholarship Program will benefit high school seniors and college students of African
descent who attend or will attend accredited institutions of higher learning. The scholarship will be
merit- and needs-based.

WHO MAY APPLY

  • Undergraduate college students of African descent attending an accredited college; or
  • Undergraduate college students of any ethnicity who have registered for or are in a study
    abroad program based in Africa; or
  • High school seniors of African descent planning to attend an accredited college.

 

COLLEGE (GENERAL) – 2 AWARDS

The winning candidate will be awarded $2,000. The runner-up will be awarded $1,000.

 

COLLEGE (AFRICAN STUDY ABROAD) – 1 AWARD

The winning candidate will be awarded $1,000.

 

HIGH SCHOOL – 1 AWARD

The winning candidate will be awarded $1,000.

 

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and response to an essay question for
each of the categories. A point system will be used and weight will be given for scholastic achievement
(GPA), honors and achievements, extracurricular involvement, and the essay response. For the "African
Study Abroad" component, extra weight will be given to a student who has studied in Africa or who
plans to do so and can prove it. Confirmation of financial aid status will also be required. Guidelines for
each of the groups are below:

        • College transcript. Minimum 3.0 GPA
        • Honors and achievements
        • Extracurricular activities
        • 1,000-word essay
      • c . Financial Aid Status
        • Evidence showing student's currently receiving financial aid
  • B. College Students (Study Abroad)
      • a . No ethnicity requirements
      • b . Scholarly Merit – point system based on
        • College transcript. Minimum 3.0 GPA
        • Study abroad confirmation letter from college
        • Honors and achievements
        • Extracurricular activities
        • 1,000-word essay
      • c . Financial Aid Status
        • Evidence showing student's currently receiving financial aid
  • C. High School Seniors
      • a . African or of African descent
      • b . Scholarly Merit – point system based on
        • Last two report cards (> B+ average)
        • Honors and achievements
        • Extracurricular activities
        • 500-word essay

AWARD

The scholarship will be paid to the institution of higher learning which the recipient plans to attend or to the student directly if they furnish receipts for eligible academic expenses in excess of the scholarship amount. The recipient may be required to provide a copy of his/her transcript from their higher learning
institution at the end of the academic year.

College Students (Study Abroad)

Why did you choose Africa as your study abroad location? How do you expect the
experience to impact your life and educational experience? (Maximum 1,000 words)

 

High School Seniors

What does the term "giving back to the community" mean to you? How do you give back to
your community? Do you believe that it is a civil duty to give back to the community? Why or
why not? (Maximum 500 words)
